The download of virtual private network applications to counter border restrictions on streaming video content has increased by 995% among Middle East and North African mobile users, according to the US Internet privacy and security company AnchorFree.
MENA is, the company says, "particularly receptive to the benefits of Hotspot Shield" as, among other things, a Web gateway to content broadcast elsewhere in the world. Total installs of the VPN app in the Middle East increased by 775%, with desktop use rising by 30%, according to the Silicon Valley-based company.
The opening week of the London 2012 Olympic Games last July saw downloads of the UK version of AnchorFree's Hotspot Shield VPN ? known as Expatshield ? shoot up by 300%, the company claims.
"Consumers are becoming increasingly annoyed by online restrictions, especially when it comes to huge, must-see events such as the Olympics," said David Gorodyansky, CEO and founder, AnchorFree.
In the US, where NBC provided restricted free Internet coverage from the BBC of the Olympic Games, Expatshield installations grew from 3,400 to over 10,600 a day during the premier global sporting event, says AnchorFree.
"We live in a 'borderless world', an age where on-demand digital streaming is rife and adaptation is necessary. Whether for entertainment or even business purposes, there is an unprecedented appetite for gaining access to the content that matters most. They say that where there's a will, there's a way and ? make no mistake ? the internet has created a way," added Gorodyansky.
His company claims the number of people actively using Hotspot Shield in 2012 doubled, from 4.5 million to ten million a month. Available for PC, Mac, iOS and Android platforms, AnchorFree says over 120 million people in 190 countries have now downloaded Hotspot Shield.
